Ditch the Shoebox – Go Paperless Before EOFY Hits!
EOFY RESOLUTION - GO PAPERLESS
Hey you. Yep, you with the overflowing inbox and the shoebox full of receipts. EOFY is knocking – more like kicking the door in – and it’s time for some real talk (no judgement, promise).
Let’s be honest, EOFY can feel like a bit of a sh*tshow. Even my husband asked me recently if he could claim the dog as a business expense. (True story. He was 100% serious.)
So let’s get this straight:
👉 If you’re laughing while you ask, the answer’s probably no.
👉 If it genuinely helps you earn income, then sure, it might be claimable.
👉 But let’s not get greedy – the ATO isn’t exactly known for its sense of humour.
EOFY doesn’t have to be painful. The key? Keep it simple. Get your paperwork in order. Go paperless. And get ahead of the chaos before June 30 rolls around.
I once had a client deliver three months’ worth of invoices in a colour-coded expanding file – not bad, right? Except most of them were printed on thermal paper and had faded so badly, I had to dig out a lamp and grab a magnifying glass just to make out the totals. It turned a basic task into a frustrating mess. And worse? Some invoices weren’t claimable anymore. That’s time and money gone.

EOFY RESOLUTION - SAVE TIME AND MONEY!
So what’s the fix?
Going paperless doesn’t mean turning into a tech wizard – it means getting smart with simple habits. Here’s how small business owners can go digital without the drama:
📸 Snap and upload – Use apps like Xero, Hubdoc, or Dext to photograph invoices and receipts the moment you get them. They’ll extract the details and store them safely in your system. No more guessing if that crumpled receipt was fuel or Friday night dinner.
📧 Use a dedicated email – Ask suppliers to send invoices to your Xero or Hubdoc email address so they land exactly where they need to be.
🗂️ Ditch the file drawers – Switch to cloud storage like Google Drive or Dropbox. Create folders for each month or supplier. Easy to access, easy to share.
🔁 Automate the boring bits – Set up repeating bills in Xero for your regular expenses like insurance or subscriptions.
🧾 Save your receipts from fading – If it lives in your car or wallet, it’s probably unreadable by tax time. Take a quick photo and upload it straight away.
As EOFY approaches, here’s a quick checklist to get you moving:
✔️ Make sure your expenses are entered and up to date
✔️ Chase any unpaid invoices
✔️ Get your super sorted
✔️ Double-check your GST codes
✔️ Back up your files – just in case!
And if all of this feels like it’s in the “too hard basket”? That’s where I come in. I genuinely love the backend of business – the organising, reconciling, sorting – so you don’t have to stress.
Going paperless is one of the simplest ways to make EOFY (and every month after it) a whole lot smoother. No shoeboxes. No fading ink. Just clarity, control, and more time to do what you actually enjoy.
