"What Do Snoopy, Chiang Mai, and a Rainforest Desk Have in Common?"
This is the WHY!
Why I Became a Virtual Assistant (and why I love it)
Travel was the biggest push behind my decision to start Virtually Done Admin Support. I wanted the freedom to work from anywhere, whether it was on the road travelling Australia in Snoopy, sitting in a café in Chiang Mai, or working behind my desk in my rainforest piece of paradise. I craved the flexibility to choose my hours, work with clients I genuinely enjoy, and never be stuck in the old nine to five grind again.
This vision led me to build a business on my terms, supporting others to thrive while blending my love for customer relationships, admin, and bookkeeping. It has become the perfect mix of everything I enjoy, all wrapped up in a way that suits my life right now.
My focus is not just ticking off admin tasks. It is about being a dynamic partner who evolves with your business. As your needs change, I adapt and help you stay focused on what truly drives you forward.
My journey here was not exactly a straight line. I have owned (and survived) five businesses with my husband, all built from scratch. Each venture taught me to be resourceful, innovative, and resilient. I have worked my butt off for little reward, pivoted to plans B, C, D… sometimes even E. I have juggled cash flow like my life depended on it (because sometimes it did), learned to look after my mental health, and developed the kind of tenacity only a massive mortgage can inspire.
I have had the joy of seeing our businesses succeed and the pride of earning respect from peers, all while learning that you have to dig deep and keep showing up.
Starting Virtually Done was my way to help others do the same, to thrive. I love working side by side with business owners and entrepreneurs, rolling up my sleeves to solve problems and ease those pain points. My skill set is broad and still growing. If I do not know it, I will learn it. I do not niche myself because my whole working life has been one big, glorious mix.
“The smartest business owners know: every hour saved and every task handed over is an investment in your success.”
Funny to think back, not that long ago, I was a guest relations coordinator at a company that still used mountains of paper. I actually loved it, the smell, the feel, the trust of holding paper in your hands. When they went digital, I thought, “How can I possibly trust a file I can’t hold in my hand?!” Fast forward, here I am now, fully cloud based, paperless, video calls galore… and thriving. Who would have thought?
Another “glamorous” part of this life: working in pj’s, grandkids running wild around the desk (“Mimi, can I help?” — please, no!), endless coffee, and yes, wine after 4 pm is totally fair game. But here is the catch: self-discipline. I learned fast that if I do not get up, get dressed, do my hair and make-up, let the chooks out, put a load of washing on, and treat my home office like a real workplace, I will end up pulling weeds, calling Mum, or scrolling Instagram until it is 10 am.
Oh, and tech? I might be the least techy person you know. Yet somehow, I now juggle multiple screens, apps, and gadgets like a slightly confused pro. When things go wrong — and they do — I always know who to call.
A little side note: why choose a VA instead of an employee?
Well, let’s see… I do not need a desk in your office, I do not raid the staff fridge, and I will not awkwardly corner you in the kitchen to share some juicy gossip. You do not have to pay me sick leave, superannuation, or shout me Friday morning muffins (or Friday afternoon drinkies!). You can scale support up or down as your business needs shift. There are no long-term commitments, HR headaches, surprise birthday cakes at lunch time, or dealing with menopause meltdowns in the office. You just get exactly the help you need, when you need it.
The VA journey has been challenging, rewarding, and downright hilarious at times. Today, I work with clients who inspire me, push me to learn, and even let me travel across Australia for events. And soon, I will be adding another piece of my heart — photography — into the mix.
Stay tuned. There is so much more to come.
